Several student organisations at Jahangirnagar University demonstrated on Wednesday night in support of banning the Awami League amid publication of a United Nations report that found the party leaders responsible for committing crimes against humanity.

The protesters brought out a procession from the university’s Murad Chattar area at about 10:30pm that ended with a short rally at the main entrance to the university, adjacent to the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.

Leaders and activists of the university unit of the Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Students Movement against Discrimination, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and some other organisations took part in the procession.

The students chanted slogans demanding banning the Awami League and blamed the political party for mass killing with an ‘Indian prescription’ to retain power.

While addressing the rally, a member of the convening committee of the university unit of Chhatra Dal Zakir Hossain said, ‘The fall of the tyrant Hasina came at the cost of many lives. The Awami fascists, however, feel no remorse for the bloodshed.’

‘We demand that the interim government immediately ban the Awami League and ensure the maximum legal punishment for its crimes,’ he said.

Mahfuzul Islam Megh, the coordinator of Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, echoed the sentiments, saying, ‘The Awami League has a long-standing history of suppressing democracy, dating back to 1975.’

‘By orchestrating three consecutive fraudulent elections, they have undermined democratic principles,’ he added.

On Wednesday, the Geneva-based UN human rights office reported that security and intelligence agencies ‘systematically engaged’ in human rights violations, which may constitute crimes against humanity and warrant further investigation.

It also estimated that up to 1,400 people were killed in Bangladesh over three weeks in 2024 during a crackdown on student-led demonstrations against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
