Environment, forest and climate change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan at a seminar on Wednesday said that the government was working to discourage use of single-use plastic to curb pollution and encouraging safer alternative to save environment.

‘This way, we can gradually move away from single-use plastics, for which we do not have a proper waste management system,’ she said at a conference title ‘From policy to action – integrated approaches for combating plastics and marine litter prevention in Bangladesh.’

The Department of Environment in collaboration with UNIDO and the Norwegian government organised the event at the department office in the capital, said a press release.

Rizwana condemned false claims that the government has prohibited all single-use plastics, calling them ‘blatant lies’ that create unnecessary tensions among plastic manufacturers.

Director of the department Md Kamruzzaman chaired the event where secretary to the ministry Farhina Ahmed, Norway ambassador Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen and UNIDO chief of circular economy and resource efficiency Jérôme Stucki, among others , addressed the programme.

The initiative is part of the project ‘Integrated Approach Towards Sustainable Plastics Use and Marine Litter Prevention in Bangladesh,’ which aims to tackle plastic pollution through a multi-faceted approach, integrating policy, innovation, and sustainable solutions.

Experts and academics take part in discussions.
