
Detective Branch arrested at least 12 people in four mugging cases, including the four for cutting off the hand of a man reportedly after robbing his mobile phone in the Adabar area of Bangladesh capital Dhaka.
DB chief Rezaul Karim Mallik revealed the information at a press briefing held at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police media centre on Minto Road in the capital on Saturday.
In a broad daylight on January 30, muggers chopped off the left hand of Sumon Sheikh, 26, a mason and a resident of Darussalam Ansar Camp area, and snatched away his mobile phone.
The arrested are Md Alamgir, 26, Shahjahan, 33, Toriqul Islam, 19 and Md Rahat Hossaim, 18.
‘DB’s Motijheel zone arrested them during a drive at different placcs in the city on Friday night,’ DB chief Rezaul said.
In another raid, the main suspect was arrested early Saturday for stabbing car driver Saju Mia to death in the Bijoynagar area of Paltan in Dhaka on January 21.
A DB team arrested the main suspect Rokon Mia during a drive in the Chawk Bazar area of Cumilla at about 1:30am on Saturday, said DB chief Rezaul said.
The DB also arrested six persons for robbing one kilogramme of gold from an employee of a gold shop, Rajib Das, in the Court Building area under Kotwali police station in the city on November 27, 2024, he said.
They were arrested during drives in Patuakhali and different places in Dhaka on Wednesday and Thursday. About 900 grams of gold was recovered at the time of the arrests.
Md Shamim Hossain, 24, accused in seven cases of mugging and robbery, meanwhile, was arrested during a drive in Rampura rail crossing area at about 1:30am on Saturday.
Besides, DB Wari team arrested five people, including main accused Mahfuz in a case filed over killing a student of Donia College in Jatrabari of the capital, Minhaj on January 28.
Minhaj was hacked to death due to previous enmity, DB chief Rezaul Karim said, adding that the five accused were arrested during special drive in Patuakhali sadar police station area on Friday.
The arrested are Mahfuj Sarkar, 22, Md Jahidul Bhuiyan Shaon, 27, Md Sabbir Sarkar, 18, Md Ashik, 22, and Md Sohan Mia, 19.
