The students of Government Titumir College blocked the road in front of the college for the second consecutive day on Friday demanding that the government upgrade the institution to an independent university.

The students began their mass hunger strike on Wednesday morning to press home their seven-point demand, including a separate university for them and resignation of the principal of the college.

They started blocking the road on Thursday.

Commuters using the road suffered immensely due to the ongoing proetsts by the students, prompting authorities to divert commuters to other roads leading to traffic congestion even at the weekend.

After daylong road blockade on Thursday, the protesting students again blocked both sides of the road in front of the college at about 3:00pm on Friday and continued their programme till filing of this report at 10:00pm.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Gulshan Division additional deputy commissioner for traffic Ziaur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the students did not allow any vehicles on both sides of the roads.

‘We have diverted vehicles to other roads and peoples’ sufferings are less than yesterday as today is a weekend,’ Ziaur said.

Ziaur also said that the students took position in front of the campus gate throughout the night.

At about 5:00pm on Wednesday, students began an indefinite hunger strike and put forward their seven demands under the banner of Titumir Oikya.

Titumir College principal Shipra Rani Mondal said that she held meetings with representatives from the education ministry to resolve the issue.

She also said that she tried several times to break the students’ fast but to no avail.

‘I cannot upgrade the college into University as it is a task of the education ministry and the University Grants Commission,’ Shipra added.

On Monday, Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan said that the university authorities had decided to cancel the affiliation of seven colleges, including Titumir College, following the overnight clashes between the university students and the students of the colleges in the capital.

The DU VC said that no student would be admitted to the colleges under the DU from the 2024-2025 academic year.

University Grants Commission chairman professor SMA Faiz, also head of an expert committee formed by the education ministry in the past year to review the demands of the students of seven colleges for a separate university, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they were working on the issue.

‘We cannot say anything about the demand of the students for a separate university for the Titumir College,’ he said, adding that the government could tell about the matter.

The ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division additional secretary for College Wing Md Rabiul Islam said that he did not have any knowledge to comment on the issue.
