A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Monday placed former state minister for disaster management and relief Enamur Rahman on a six-day remand in police custody in a murder case following his arrest Sunday night by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s detective branch.
Enamur, who had served as the state minister under the ousted Awami League government from 2019 to 2024, was arrested in the Basundhara residential area in the capital Dhaka in a raid by the DB.
As police produced him before the court, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Joshtia Islam passed an order, placing Enamur on the six-day remand in police custody in the case filed over the killing of Sagor, a hawker, in the capital’s Mirpur-10 area on July 19, 2024 during a student-led mass uprising.
The authoritarian Awami League regime was ousted on August 5, 2024, amid the uprising.
On November 27, 2024, Sagor’s sister Beauty Akter filed the case against 242 people, including the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, with the Mirpur Model Police Station.
DB joint commissioner for North Rabiul Islam said that Enamur was arrested at about 11:00pm on Sunday in the Basundhara residential area.
‘He was arrested in a murder case filed with the Mirpur Model Police Station. Enamur is also accused in several other cases filed with the Savar Model Police Station,’ Rabiul told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Enamur was elected lawmaker for the Dhaka-19 constituency with the Awami League party tickets in the general elections held in 2014 and 2018.
He was defeated by an independent candidate in the general elections held on January 7, 2024.
