The first ever Bangladeshi all-women team that had recently made an expedition to Himalayan peaks was honoured at Liberation War Museum on January 23.
Team leader Nishat Mazumder, Arpita Debnath, Mousumi Aktar, Tahura Sultana Rekha and Yasmin Lisa began the Himalayan expedition on December 21 last year, climbed three peaks— 5145 metre-tall Surya Peak, 4747m-tall Gosaikunda Peak and 5,500m-tall Yala Peak, and returned to Bangladesh on January 14.Â
At an experience sharing event, the mountaineers recollected their challenging days during the expedition. Â
The expedition was done to celebrate recognition of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s renowned literary work ‘Sultana’s Dream’ as a UNESCO ‘Memory of the World’.
Mountaineering association Abhijatri organised the expedition, supported by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Liberation War Museum and the global payment technology brand Mastercard.
A press release issued on Thursday said that the challenging journey of five Bangladeshi women created opportunities to showcase Begum Rokeya’s vision of women’s emancipation and social liberation on international platforms.
Following the expedition, local organisers in Kathmandu of Nepal, announced plans to publish a Nepali translation of Sultana’s Dream, said the press release.
Liberation War Museum trustees Mofidul Hoque and Sara Zaker, Mastercard country manager Syed Mohammad Kamal, UNESCO’s, head of communications and public engagement, Nusrat Amin, among others, were also present at the event.
