Nuruzzaman, also the general secretary of Shahjahanpur unit of Awami Swechchhasebak League, is accused 15 criminal cases, including one for attempted murder, said police.

Nuruzzaman was reportedly visiting the university’s central sports field in the afternoon to meet a person when students recognised and detained him. He was taken to the university’s security office and later handed over to Ashulia police station at night.

His wife, Sumaiya Akter, who arrived at the university after learning of his arrest, claimed that Nuruzzaman had been living at a relative’s house in Dhaka’s Khilkhet area following political changes.

She added that he was trying to enrol their children in a Dhaka school and start a business. He was at JU to meet someone regarding his National ID card update.

JU security officer Jafrul Hasan Chowdhury Sajal said that students informed them of Nuruzzaman’s detention, and for safety reasons, they took him to the security office.

‘Later, in the presence of JU proctor, we handed him over to Ashulia police,’ he added.

JU proctor professor AKM Rashidul Alam said that after verifying identity and learning about the cases against him, they handed Nuruzzaman over to the police at about 5:30pm.

Ashulia police station officer-in-charge Abu Bakor Siddique confirmed the arrest.

‘We have taken him into custody, and there are several cases against him. Legal action will be taken accordingly,’ the OC added.

A Bogra court sent the chairman to prison on Thursday following a total of 15 criminal charges against him.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Judge Sumaiya Siddika of Bogura ordered his imprisonment after he was produced in court, said inspector of Bogura Court Police Mosaddeq Hossain.
