The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday took decision to conduct an inquiry against the officials who abused power and were involved in irregularities in the 2018 National Election.

The Commission had received complaints of manipulation during the 11th National Election in response of which a five-member inquiry team was formed, commission director general for prevention Md Akhtar Hossain told a journalist briefing held at its headquarters.


The inquiry team will specifically examine the activities of officers from the administration, the Election Commission, and the police, he added.

The ACC official also said that allegations were made regarding abuse of power, criminal misconduct, fraud, voting at night during the 2018 national election, and the election of lawmakers in exchange of money.

In the 2018 national election, irregularities, including voting at night, ballot fraud, vote counts exceeding 90 per cent in some centres and extensive financial transactions, were reported in the media.

The allegations were made against then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, and its general secretary Obaidul Quader.

The accusations also implicated leaders and activists from Awami League at various levels as well as former civil servants, including former inspector general of police Javed Patwary, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, former Rapid Action Battalion director general Benazir Ahmed, former IGP Shahidul Haque, and former prime minister鈥檚 security adviser Major General (retired) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, HT Imam.

The inquiry team will submit a report after reviewing video footage, news broadcasts from domestic and foreign media, and election results, and completing other necessary activities, said the ACC official.
