Jahangirnagar University authorities detained and handed over a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist to police on allegations of involvement in the July-August uprising attack.

The incident occurred on Sunday when Shariful Islam Sohan, a fourth-year student of the environmental sciences department, was taking his final exam at 1:00 pm.

Sohan, a resident of AFM Kamaluddin Hall and a student from the 2019-20 academic session, was taken into custody during the examination.

Eyewitnesses reported that Sohan had been seated in the examination hall since the test began at 12:30pm. Upon learning of his presence, other students demanded his exam be halted, citing allegations against him.

Initially, the department chair allowed Sohan to continue the exam, but agitated students pressed for immediate action.

Citing a JU list of accused BCL activists linked to attacks on students during the mass uprising, protesting student Sakib Hasan said that he was personally harmed by Sohan.

‘Authorities must take action against the marked perpetrators,’ he added.

The university proctorial officials arrived at the scene, and Sohan was handed over to Ashulia police station for further legal action.

JU proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said that they would fully cooperate with law enforcement to ensure justice in the matter.

Regarding the allegations against Sohan, the proctor noted that legal proceedings against the accused individuals were ongoing.

However, he clarified that Sohan was handed over to the police following students’ demands.
