The Jahangirnagar University administration on Friday decided to file a case with the International Crimes Tribunal over attacks on students on the campus in July and August during the student movement against discrimination.
The authorities took the initiative following the submission of a preliminary investigation report on Thursday by the committee formed to probe the attacks.
A statement signed by the acting director of the university’s public relations office, Mohammad Mohiuddin, revealed the university decision.
According to the statement, the university has formed a panel comprising two Supreme Court lawyers to evaluate whether the evidence collected by the investigation committee aligns with the Evidence Act 1872.
Asked about the merit of filing the case with the ICT, JU pro-vice-chancellor for administrative affairs professor Sohel Ahmed said, ‘The initiative was taken in response to the students’ demands.’
‘Students cannot place their trust in the police as law enforcers are among the accused,’ he added.
Earlier on September 21, 2024, JU authorities formed the probe committee, led by JU Bangla department professor Aniruddha Kahali, following allegations of brutal attacks by law enforcement personnel and members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League on campus during the quota reform student movement.
