
The 90th anniversary of birth of playwright, theatre activist and actor Momtazuddin Ahmed will be observed today.
Theatre troupe Theatre will organise a programme to commemorate the life and work of Momtazuddin Ahmed, featuring discussion, theatrical show, music show and recitation, at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.Â
Born on January 18, 1935 in Malda in the then British India, one of the major playwrights and theatre activists of the country Momtazuddin Ahmed, known for his satirical plays and columns exposing social and political anomalies, participated in the Language Movement during his college days at Rajshahi Government College.
He wrote around 40 plays for stage, radio and television and directed several of them besides acting in some of the most popular TV dramas in the 1970s and ‘80s.
Apart from plays, he wrote novels, research papers, essays, newspaper columns and screenplays for films.
He also taught Bangla, Sanskrit and European drama in several non-government and government colleges. He was also a professor at the Bangla department of Jagannath University.
His well-known plays include ‘Ki Chaho Shankhachil’, ‘Raja Anusarer Pala’, ‘Bakulpurer Swadhinata’ and ‘Khyata Bikhyata’.Â
He received several awards, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award and Ekushey Padak.
Momtazuddin Ahmed passed away on June 2, 2019.
