A two-day event, March for Mother, for raising fund for Gonoshasthaya Community-based Cancer Hospital and awareness about cervical cancer concluded in Gazipur on Sunday.

Gonoshasthaya Community-based Cancer Hospital and March for Mother jointly started the march at GK Nagar Hospital through a discussion meeting on Saturday, said a press release.

Professor Altafunnesa, chairperson of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra Trust, presided over the event, while project coordinator Professor Habibullah Talukder Ruskin outlined the programme’s goals and objectives.

Gonoshasthaya Trust trustee retired Major General Fatemi Ahmed Rumi, former senior secretary Md Abdus Samad Faruk, former additional secretary Abdul Hakim Mazumder, Professor Nizam Uddin, CCPR executive director Mosarrat Sourav, World Cancer Society Bangladesh president Syed Humayun Kabir, HEAL founder Zebunnesa, National Press Club executive member Shahnaz Polli, rotarians Ashiq Ul Alam and Syed Aftabuzzaman, journalist and writer Asif Nabi, and Anwar Babu, among others, spoke at the event.

The ‘March for Mothers’ procession began afterward, holding 11 street meetings and distributing awareness leaflets along the way, which concluded in Gazipur on Sunday, with Professor Habibullah Talukder Ruskin announcing its closure.

Ruskin emphasised that cervical cancer prevention and treatment were possible by administering a single dose of the HPV vaccine to girls aged between 9 to 15, conducting regular screenings from age 30 and seeking medical advice without hesitation if symptoms appeared.

He also urged everyone to play a role in raising awareness about this issue.

He further stated that everyone should work together to fulfil the unfinished dream of freedom fighter  Zafrullah Chowdhury by transforming the Gonoshasthaya Community-based Cancer Hospital into a cancer hospital for the masses.

He encouraged people to donate as much as they could do to this cause.
