Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called for unity to restore democracy in the country.
‘We should avoid engaging in the politics of division. To restore democracy, we must build inclusive structures, and reforms will undoubtedly be necessary,’ he said at a book launch event held at the party’s Gulshan office.
The book titled ‘Rajbandir Jabanbandi’ is based on the statement given in court during the hearings of the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case filed against Khaleda Zia.
Mirza Fakhrul said that any reform would not get legitimacy without an elected parliament and an elected government.
‘The power necessary for such reforms must come from an elected parliament and an elected government. Without this, we will never be able to legitimise the reform. Only the fascists will have the ability to impose it,’ he said.
Mirza Fakhrul appealed to all democracy-loving people to remain united and avoid division.
He urged political leaders and activists, wherever they might be, not to create any form of division.
‘I don't know, some people have become so desperate that they are making provocative statements. Please do not get involved with them,’ BNP secretary general said.
Fakhrul also said that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman would soon be fully cleared of all cases after which he would come back.
The event, chaired by BNP chairperson’s advisory council member Ismail Zabihullah, was also addressed by, among others, eminent journalist Shafiq Rehman and adviser to BNP acting chairman Mahdi Amin.
