Today is the 79th anniversary of the birth of renowned actor Tele Samad.

Abdus Samad, widely known as Tele Samad, was born in Munshiganj on January 8, 1945.


He studied at the then Institute of Fine Art, now faculty of fine art of Dhaka University.

The actor adopted the name Tele Samad after his entry into the silver screen with Nazrul Islam-directed film ‘Kar Bou’ in 1973.

Tele Samad’s fame skyrocketed after Amzad Hossain’s ‘Nayanmoni’ was released. He also worked as the music director for the film ‘Mona Pagla’.

He acted in around 600 films and lent his voice as a playback singer for around 60 films.

He carved a niche for himself acting in films such as ‘Sujan Sakhi’, ‘Golapi Ekhan Trene’, ‘Paye Chalar Path’, ‘Nagardola’, ‘Matir Ghar’ and ‘Natun Bou’.

He was the most sought-after actor throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s as he stood for a kind of comic relief that defined the spirit of his times.

His last film, Animesh Aich-directed Zero Degree, was released in 2015.

Tele Samad passed away on April 6, 2019.
