They seek ban on Saad followers’ activities

Followers of Tabligh Jamaat’s Maulana Zubair group on Saturday announced that they would hold protest rallies across the country on January 10 demanding the interim government ban Maulana Muhammad Saad Kandhalvi followers’ activities for its alleged involvement in killings devotees in 2018 and 2024.

They also demanded ensuring trial of Saad supporters for the killing of devotees on the Ijtema ground at Tongi in Gazipur on December 17 past year.

Zubair group leader Nazmul Hasan Kashemi made the announcement while reading out a written statement at a press conference at the Kakrail mosque in the capital on Saturday afternoon.

‘We will organise protest rallies across the country on January 10 to realise our demands,’ said Nazmul.

Nazmul said that they would announce their next programme on January 25.

Ameer of Hefazat-e-Islam Mahibullha Babunagari and Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Moinul Islam-Hathazari director general Allama Khalil Ahmed Koraishi jointly signed the written statement.

Khelafat Majlish secretary general Mamunul Haque said that they wanted to resolve the crisis through discussions but there would be no discussion with killers now.

Hefazat-e-Islam Ameer Mahibullha Babunagari, Al Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Moinul Islam-Hathazari director general Allama Khalil Ahmed Koraishi and Hefazt-e-Islam secretary general Shaykh Sajidur Rahman, among others, were present at the press conference.

On Thursday, the home ministry in a circular called on supporters of two Tabligh Jamaat groups to refrain from creating chaos.

Earlier on December 26, 2024, the ministry banned activities of the followers of Maulana Saad at the Kakrail Mosque and also imposed restrictions on large gatherings by the supporters of Maulana Zubair near the mosque.

On December 18, 2024, at least four people were killed and scores others injured in a clash between two factions of the Tabligh Jamaat.

Earlier in December 2018, a man was killed and more than 200 others were injured as the two factions clashed over control of the Ijtema ground.
