The authorities of Jahangirnagar University have suspended four students on charges of possessing and consuming alcohol temporarily.
According to a notice issued Wednesday night by the JU public relations office, signed by its director Mohammad Mohiuddin, the students were accused under the Jahangirnagar University Students’ Discipline Ordinance-2018.
The notice stated that the decision was based on a preliminary investigation conducted by the university’s proctorial team, which discovered alcohol in the possession of the students.
The suspended individuals are Shipon Hossain and Satyartho Biswas Bandhon from the institute of comparative literature and culture, and Hroi Muing Sang Marma and Krishna Chandra Barman from the department of drama and dramatics.
To further investigate the incident, the university has formed a probe committee, headed by professor Abdul Halim, provost of Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall. The committee has been asked to submit its findings and recommendations within 15 working days.
The incident occurred early Wednesday, when the proctorial team conducted a raid and detained nine individuals, including the four JU students, for alleged drug use and possession. Among the others detained were students from Dhaka University and private institutions.
The university authorities handed over the non-JU individuals to the Ashulia police station and stated that they would send official letters to the respective institutions of other students, urging disciplinary action against them.
JU proctor AKM Rashidul Alam reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug use, emphasising that strict measures would be taken to maintain discipline on campus.
