Theatre troupe Opera staged its production titled ‘Closet Land’ at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Narayanganj on Saturday.

Under the programme titled ‘Jananatya 2024-2025’, organised by the BSA drama and film department, Opera performed the play for the first time in Narayanganj.

Closet Land, the fifteenth theatre production of Opera, has been directed by Sazzad Sabbir.

The play was written by Indian filmmaker, film producer and writer Radha Bharadwaj and translated by Nahid Smrity.

‘We staged this play for the first time outside of Dhaka. We received a huge response from the audience of Narayanganj,’ said Sazzad Sabbir.

The play revolves around a young woman litterateur, who is apprehended and interrogated by watchdogs of a totalitarian regime on charges of writing subversive works.

The interrogator asks the author about an unpublished story about a little girl who discovers a Narnia-like kingdom in the closet. The girl’s mother locked her up in the closet to punish her.

Although the author is tortured physically and emotionally, she refuses to admit that she committed a crime by writing the story.

Sazzad Sabbir portrayed the character of the interrogator and Nahid Smrity played the character of woman litterateur in the play.

The stage, light and costume were also designed by Sazzad Sabbir and the background music was designed and collected by Nahid Smrity.
