A temple of a follower of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, better known as ISKCON, was set on fire at Dhour in the capital’s Turag area early Saturday.
The Shri Shri Mahabhagya Lakshmi Narayan Temple was set on fire by unidentified people at about 3:00am on Saturday, said Turag police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Rahat Khan.
‘The temple is a family temple and the members of the family are followers of ISKCON,’ the OC added.
He said that Babul Chandra Ghosh filed a case with his police station accusing unidentified people on Saturday.
He said that one was arrested so far in this connection.
The plaintiff, Babul Chandra Ghosh, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they could not identify the perpetrators as the incident took place in the dark of night.
‘A vested group is trying to destabilise the religious harmony. We have no enmity with anyone as we have been offering prayers in the temple since its establishment in 1961,’ he added.
Babul hoped that members of the law enforcement agencies would find out the offenders and bring them to book.
According to the case statements, the incident took place between 11:30pm on Friday and 3:00am on Saturday as the family members went to bed after having their dinner at about 11:30pm.
A Mobil-soaked shopping bag and a two-litre water bottle, believed to be used to carry flammable liquid like octane or petrol, were found by the side of the temple after dousing the fire, the case statement said.
It also said that the fire gutted the Narayan idol and damaged goods worth about Tk 1 lakh.
