
At least fifty people were injured in a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Nationalist Party near Musa Market of Banchharampur upazila town in Brahmanbaria on Monday centring the council of Banchharampur upazila unit of the party.
Agitated people set fire to four motorcycles and vandalised thirty shops. Banchharampur upazila BNP council is supposed to be held on November 20.
Local people said that there was tension between the supporters of former lawmaker Abdul Khalek and Krishak Dal central leader Mehedi Hasan Palash over influencing the council.
On Monday noon, an anti-council agitation procession, led by lawmaker Abdul Khalek and central BNP leader Rafik Shikder, was brought out from Palli Bidyut crossing of the upazila sadar.
Several hundred leaders and activists participated in the procession carrying sticks and machete. In the meantime, Mehedi Hasan Palash鈥檚 supporters threw brickbats targeting the procession. At one stage they engaged in clashes.
The clash lasted about one hour when over fifty people were injured, according to the BNP leaders and police. The injured were taken to a local hospital and some sent to Dhaka.
Banchharampur police station in-charge Morshed Alam said that the clash occurred between two groups of BNP centring their council likely to be held on 20 November. The situation is quite calm now, he added.
