A robbery at a residence in the capital ended with the tragic abduction of an eight-month-old girl on Friday morning.

The robbery took place in broad daylight at about 9:00am at a house near Lalbagh Tower in the Azimpur area.

The robbers first looted money and gold jewellery from the house before snatching away the baby girl and leaving with her.

Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Lalbagh division Md Jasimuddin said that the robbery took place just a day after the victim family sublet their house to a woman.

‘The subtenant opened the door to three outsiders allowing them to enter the house on Friday morning. They later looted money, gold jewellery, and abducted the child,’ he said, adding that the family could not provide the identity of the woman that moved into the house.

Based on the mother’s explanation, the police primarily was suspecting that the subtenant was behind the looting and kidnapping, DC Jasim said.

Lalbagh police station officer-in-charge Kyasawhnue Marma said that no formal complaint was filed until the filing of the report at 10:00pm, but the police started an investigation into the robbery.

Also efforts are underway to rescue the child, the OC added.

The police identified the main tenant of the house as Farzana Akhtar, an employee of the Ministry of Home Affairs, who lived in the house with her husband, Abu Zafar, who works at a private company, and their only child.

A post regarding the incident with the child’s photo on Facebook uploaded by Farzana’s colleague, meanwhile, went viral on Friday afternoon.

The post said, ‘A robbery occurred at my colleague Farzana’s house next to Lalbagh Tower at Azimpur. The robbers, consisting of one woman and two men, took away her belongings and her only child.’
