
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said that the interim government wanted to prolong its tenure and stay in power for 20 years.
The party also urged students and people to remain vigilant and united to resist any attempts by the Awami League to make a comeback.
BNP standing committee members Major (retired) Hafizuddin Ahmed and Abdul Moyeen Khan made the remarks while addressing聽 separate events in Dhaka.
Hafizuddin Ahmed, addressing a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters鈥 Unity,聽 also alleged that several pro-Awami League individuals were appointed to the advisory council of the interim government.
Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal organised the programme to mark the 鈥榗ivil-military uprising鈥 of November 7, 1975, the day the BNP and its associate organisations observe as the 鈥楴ational Revolution and Solidarity Day鈥.
鈥榃e know that the main function of this government is to hand over power to the elected representatives after holding a fair election. But, they want to stay in power for 20 years,鈥 he said.
The government will have to arrange the national election by completing electoral reforms in a very short period, he said, and added that the rest of the reforms would be done by the elected government.
鈥楾he fascist government of the Awami League under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina has destroyed all the institutions of the country, including the police. The Awami League made the police 鈥渁 killer force鈥.鈥
He said that the Sheikh Hasina regime had enacted dangerous laws including the Digital Security Act to suppress the voice of the people.
The BNP leader said that the throne of the government was shaken in the face of a strong movement by the BNP and other political parties, and, at the final stage, students and their parents joined the movement and forced Hasina to flee the country.
Abdul Moyeen Khan, while inaugurating a financial support and rehabilitation programme for the students injured in the July-August mass uprising at the National Ophthalmology Hospital in Agargaon in Dhaka, urged the students and people to remain vigilant and united in resisting any attempts by the Awami League to make a comeback.
He said that the first phase of the student-led mass movement was the formation of the interim government and their swearing-in and the second phase was securing a fair election, which the country was yet to achieve.
He said that the success of the movement would be achieved when representatives elected by the people would take charge of the country.
The BNP leader later visited patients, who had sustained injuries during the movement, at the hospital and provided financial assistance to 51 of them.
