A United Kingdom emergency medical team, funded by the UK government, has arrived in Bangladesh to provide specialised medical treatment to the students injured during July-August 2024 protests, said a press release issued on Tuesday.

The release said that the deployment was taking place in response to a formal request for assistance from the interim government.

The team consists of an orthopaedic surgeon, a physiotherapist and rehabilitation expert and a clinical coordinator. They will be working at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation from November 5 to 18.

The clinical experts of this team have vast experience in treating patients in conflict-affected areas worldwide, said the release.

Nearly 1,000 injured people are still taking treatment at different hospitals across the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services confirmed 872 deaths and 5,224 injured during the protests in July and August.

The health subcommittee of the Student Movement against Discrimination, however, has submitted a draft list of 1,612 deaths and over 30,000 injured victims to the government committee for finalisation.

Various local and international non-governmental agencies also have come up with their own lists.
