A former member of the Bangladesh Army died as he jumped off the roof of the second floor of a hotel near Tongi Railway Station in Gazipur during a joint drive by law enforcement agencies in the area early Monday.

A total of 157 people were also arrested at two places in Tongi during the joint drive conducted jointly by the members of the Bangladesh Army, the Border Guard Bangladesh, the Rapid Action Battalion and the police.


The joint forces also arrested a former additional secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Md Amjad Hossain, and his son KM Asif Hasan and seized Tk 1.09 crore in cash and foreign currencies in a separate drive at their home in the capital’s Uttara Sunday night.   

Tongi East police station officer-in-charge Kaiser Ahmed said that a former army member, Mizanur Rahman Milton, aged around 50, died as he jumped from the second floor of the Javan Residential Hotel while the joint forces had been conducting a raid at the hotel at about 4:00am on Monday.

He said that they later recovered his body and sent it to hospital for post-mortem examination.

The OC said that it was evident that Mizanur was trying to flee the scene during the drive.

He said that the joint drive was conducted there to arrest suspected drug peddlers, members of mugging gangs, and the people involved in doing immoral activities.

The OC said that the joint forces also arrested 157 people – 74 at the hotel in the Keranirtek area and 83 at another place of Tongi in Gazipur City Corporation during the drives.

They were arrested for their suspected involvement in drug peddling and other criminal activities, he said.

The joint drive began at about 3:00am on Monday,’ he said.

The joint forces also seized Tk 22 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, 10 kilograms of marijuana, 2,500 yaba tablets, 20 bottles of liquor, 10 bottles of Phensedyl, and a large number of sharp weapons during the drive in Tongi, OC Kaiser said.

Uttara West police station officer-in-charge Md Hafizur Rahman said that the army, in coordination with police, conducted an operation at the house of former additional secretary Amjad in the capital’s Uttara Sunday night.

He said that the raid lasted for several hours and Tk 1.09 crore, foreign currencies, 11 iPhones and luxury watches were seized during the drive.

OC Hafizur said that Amjad, who retired in 2020 as an additional secretary, and his son Asif were shown arrested in a case filed over keeping foreign currencies illegally.

He said that they sent the duo to a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court that sent them to jail.
