The Chief Adviser’s Office on Friday warned that some news outlets and also some people had been deliberately spreading lies and misinformation on the number of policemen who were killed during the July-August student-led uprising.

A press release issued by the press wing of the CAO said that 44 police personnel were killed during the uprising.

‘Anyone claiming more police were killed in the uprising is requested to provide evidence,’ it said.

The slain policemen included three inspectors, 11 sub-inspectors, one additional sub-inspector, seven assistant sub-inspectors, one naik and 21 constables.

The release claimed that it was the actual list of police officials killed during the uprising and the list was published by the Police Headquarters.

It also said that the police department meticulously maintained the list of officers or constables who were injured or killed in any protests or any acts of violence.

The interim government shared the lists of slain police personnel two and a half months after assuming power on August 8, three days after the fall of the AL regime amid a student-mass uprising on August 5. On August 18, the Police Headquarters also shared the same list with the media.

The slain inspectors in the uprising are Masud Parvez Bhuiyan, Abdur Razzak and Rashedul Islam.

The deceased sub-inspectors are Basir Uddin, Rois Uddin Khan, Tohsenuzzaman, Pranabesh Kumar Biswas, Nazmul Hossain, Anisur Rahman Molla, Santosh Chowdhury, Sujan Chandra Dey, Khagendra Chandra Sarker, Rezaul Karim and Mamunur Rashid Sarker.

The assistant sub-inspectors who were killed in the uprising are Sanjay Kumar Das, Firoz Hossain, Sohel Rana, Razu Ahmed, Obaidur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, and Md Muktadir.

The slain assistant traffic sub-inspector is Ali Hossain Chowdhury while the victim Nayek is Gias Uddin.

The slain constables are Mainuddin Liton, Mohammad Ibrahim, Abdus Salek, Hafizul Islam, Rabiul Alam Shah, Humayun Kabir, Ariful Azam, Riazul Islam, Shahin Uddin, Hanif Ali, Ershad Ali, Suzan Mia, Khalilur Rahman, Abdul Majid, Rezaul Karim, Mahfuzur Rahman, Shahidul Alam, Abu Hasnat Rony, Mir Montaj Ali, Sumon Kumar Gharami and Abdul Malek.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a preliminary report released on August 16, said that about 650 people were killed during the student protests between July 16 and August 11.

According to the UN body, nearly 400 deaths were reported from July 16 to August 4 while about 250 people were killed in a new wave of protests in August 5–6.

Before the fall of the Hasina regime, most of the killings took place by the police and other law enforcement agencies in indiscriminate firing.
