Teachers and students of the University of Dhaka on Monday staged a protest rally, demanding exemplary punishment for the perpetrator who raped a nine-year-old girl in the capital’s Banani on October 12.
The rally held at the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture on the DU campus also demanded justice for all rape victims and the reformation of laws related to rape.Â
Condemning the incidents, the DU mass communication and journalism department professor Robaet Ferdous said that females of all ages, from 9-year to 60-year, had been victims of rape.
‘Fair investigations into rape cases and strict implementation of exemplary punishments are crucial to preventing the recurrence of such heinous crimes,’ he emphasised.
Singer Farzana Wahid Shayan said that in society, rapists received social protection due to a culture of victim-blaming.
‘The state should strictly implement laws, and the people of the country should boycott rapists to prevent such incidents,’ she added.
In a statement on Sunday, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad also demanded advance treatment and rehabilitation for the rape victim.
Citing media reports, the statement said that the victim left home on the night of October 12 to a nearby place but did not return that night.
The next morning, she returned and informed her family that she had been raped by an unknown man who had lured her with an offer of Tk 2,000 to help him carry a bag to his house. Â
The victim was admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where she underwent surgeries, the statement read.Â
