Local people on Monday staged demonstrations blocking the way of an executive magistrate in Chapainawabganj, demanding demolition of two brick kilns for polluting environment.

Witnesses said, a mobile court led by assistant commissioner and executive magistrate Md Aminul Islam went to the Kolardiyar area under Shibganj upazila and demolished three illegal brick kilns.

When the team was returning, local people blocked their way and staged a demonstration demanding demolition of two other brick kilns in their locality, they said.

Tasaur Rahman, one of the protesters, said that the villagers had submitted several applications requesting the district administration to demolish the five brick kilns illegally built on farmlands and orchards.

‘But the district administration did not take any action till today (Monday). When the team of the district administration attempted to leave the village keeping the two brick kilns untouched, the villagers blocked their path and staged demonstrations,’ he added.

Md Aminul Islam said that the villagers withdrew their blockade at 6:40pm after they had managed to make them understand that they could not demolish a brick kiln that had a licence from the authorities concerned.

‘We have also informed the villagers that if the officials of the environment department cancel the licence of the brick kilns, we will demolish them by a mobile court’, he added.

Earlier, on September 4, students of the educational institutions near the brick kilns formed a human chain in the village demanding demolition of the five brick kilns.

They also submitted a memorandum to Shibganj upazila Nirbahi officer on the same day.
