The commerce ministry on Sunday appointed Md Anwar Hossain, vice-chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau, as administrator to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
The ministry issued an office order signed by its additional secretary Abdur Rahim Khan in this regard.聽
According to the order, the administrator will hold a fair and neutral election within 120 days, hand over the responsibility to the elected committee of the trade body, and inform the matter to the ministry.
The order stated that after SM Mannan Kochi resigned from the BGMEA as its chairman, a new board was formed, however, the process of forming the board was flawed.
Kochi, who was elected the BGMEA president on March 14 for the 2024-26 term, tendered his resignation to the BGMEA board on August 23 citing medical reasons.
In response, an emergency meeting of the BGMEA board of directors was convened on August 24 at a hotel in the capital Dhaka.
Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, managing director of Designtex Group, was appointed president of the BGMEA in the meeting.
In the most recent election, Rafiqul was elected senior vice-president of the BGMEA.
The emergency meeting also made Abdullah Hil Rakib, managing director of Team Group, senior vice-president and Asif Ashraf, managing director of Urmi Group, vice-president of the trade body.
Rakib was a vice-president and Asif was a director of the BGMEA board.
In the wake of significant political changes, including the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government after a mass uprising on August 5, a section of BGMEA members raised their voice demanding the resignation of Kochi.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, Kochi faced several cases, including one involving murder charges.
