
A 42-year-old man of Tripura community was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in the early hours of Tuesday in Pomangpara area of Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari.
Swarna Kumar Tripura, a cook by profession, was shot to death at night and the body was found near his home in Boalkhali union, said Dighinala police station officer-in-charge Muhammad Zakaria.
The murder may be linked to political disputes between regional parties, the OC said, adding that six bullet marks were found on the body, which was sent to Khagrachhari District Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
According to local residents, the sound of gunshots was heard around 2:00am in the Pomangpara area, but they did not go outside out of panic.
Earlier on September 19, a sectarian violence erupted in Dighinala upazila in the district, following the death of a Bengali, Mohammad Mamun, after rumour spread that he was beaten to death by national minority people in Khagrachhari town on September 18.
The violence, which soon spread to Khagrachhari town on the same day and in Rangamati the next day on September 20, killed four national minority people in the two hill districts.
On October 1, a teacher of Khagrachhari Government Technical School and College named Abul Hasnat Mohammad Sohel Rana was beaten to death for allegedly raping a Class VII student of Tripura community, triggering sectarian tension.
