
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Sunday observed the World Retina Day 2024 with the theme ‘Love your retina, protect your eyes’.
The National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital, BIRDEM General Hospital, Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital and Lions Eye Institute also observed the day with various events, including rallies, said a press release.
At the BSMMU, ophthalmology department chairman professor Syed Abdul Wadud, chairman of community ophthalmology department chairman Professor Shaukat Kabir, vice-president of Bangladesh Vitreo Retina Society Dr Tariq Reza Ali, its secretary general Shahnur Hasan, and its publication secretary Dr Mohammad Afzal Mahfuzullah, among others, participated at the rally.
Speakers at the rally emphasised the importance of retinopathy screening in the diagnosis of retinal disease, as well as the expansion of retinal treatment in the common population and remote retina.
Many patients are being treated with retinal hemorrhage and retinal detachment in the current context, they said.
They also said that the most important and hopeful thing was that the eyes of all those shot in the anti-discrimination student movement had been successfully operated so far and all the facilities of equipment and procedures exist in Bangladesh for this surgery.
