A video showing a youth tied to two poles and beaten to death in Chattogram city has gone viral on social media.
The 20-second video, shared on Facebook, showed the victim tied to two steel-made poles under the Akhtaruzzaman Flyover in the city’s Gate Number 2 area.
It showed that several individuals were assaulting the man while singing a Bangla song, ‘Madhu Hoi Hoi Bish Khawaila’. The others were seen cheering and playing whistles when the victim was crying.
Although the video surfaced on Facebook on September 21, the incident reportedly happened on August 14.
The deceased, Shahadat Hossain, 24, son of late Mohammad Harun, from Nadna village under Sonaimuri police station in Noakhali, was a fruit shop worker in Falmundi area of Chattogram city. He and his wife, Sharmin Akhter, used to live in the Boiler Colony of BRTC area under Kotwali police station in Chattogram.
His body was found in the port city’s Probortok area at the night following August 14 and his uncle, Md Harun, filed a murder case with Panchlaish Police Station accusing unidentified persons of the murder.
While filing the case, the family knew nothing about the brutality Shahadat had to endure before his death.
According to the case statement, Shahadat left home at about 2:00pm on August 13 for work and informed his wife in the evening that he would return home soon.
As he did not return after a long time, Sharmin tried to contact him over the telephone and found his mobile phone switched off.
At about 9:00am on the following day, Shahadat’s uncle saw a Facebook post that showed his nephew’s body lying on the side of the road adjacent to the Badnashah Mia shrine near Probortok intersection.
Police recovered the body and rushed it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the case statement said.
A police inquest report revealed Shahadat sustained severe injuries in his head, neck, and other parts of his body.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Panchlaish zone assistant commissioner Md Arif Hossain said, ‘On August 14, we recovered the body of a young man named Shahadat from the Probortok area. His uncle filed a murder case, accusing unknown individuals.
‘Recently, a video surfaced on Facebook showing Shahadat tied to steel-made poles and beaten by a group of youths, while songs were sung in the local language. Later, Shahadat’s wife identified him after seeing the video on Facebook,’ he said.
He said that the incident was unacceptable and painful, and added, ‘We have identified several individuals from the video and are now working to bring all of them to book.’
