Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin said on Saturday that he would not seek a fifth term as the president of the federation.

Salahuddin, who took over the reigns of the BFF for the first time in 2008 and has served four consecutive terms, made the announcement at an impromptu press conference at the BFF House.

‘I was with you for four terms. In the upcoming elections on October 26, I will not contest in this election, and that’s my final decision,’ said Salahuddin, not replying to a question about the reason behind his decision.

The former football star added that the federation had asked FIFA to consider deferring the BFF elections from October 26, but the world football governing body, in a letter on September 12, denied the appeal.

‘…In view of the above, we expect the elections of the BFF to take place on October 26, 2024, as scheduled and officially announced,’ FIFA stated in its latter to the BFF.

It was for the first time Salahuddin had come to his office and stayed for around an hour since the fall of the Awami League-led government on August 5.

Earlier on August 12, Salahuddin told the media about his decision to run the election in the face of demands from various groups demanding his resignation and refusal to run for the fifth term.

‘I am not resigning; instead, I will contest the election again because I will not leave football in the face of any threats,’ told the BFF boss.

On Saturday, when he was asked about the U-turn from his previous decision, the 70-year old organiser said, ‘I have already said what I had to say. I will not give an answer to your question about it.’

‘I just gave my opinion that I will not run the election. I made the announcement before (the announcement of the election schedule) to avoid any kind of confusion,’ he added.
