The Dhaka Metropolitan Police traffic department has begun drives against unauthorised battery-run rickshaws plying main roads in the city ignoring traffic rules after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5.
The DMP’s drives were visible on Thursday as traffic police had conducted the drives in various city areas, including Dhanmondi, Karwan Bazar and Mirpur areas on the day.
Police neither fined nor sent any rickshaw to dumping stations, plunging the capital city into traffic chaos.
An official of the DMP said that the drives were not being carried out on a large scale due to fear of another protest, which would cause further sufferings to the city dwellers.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner for traffic Khondaker Nazmul Hassan, the police began drives on battery-run rickshaws from Sunday.
‘The drives were carried out in many areas on Thursday and this is why it was visible to all. We did not take wrecker bills from anyone and did not dump any rickshaw,’ Nazmul told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
He said that they were not worried about any protest as people were supporting this initiative.
In the recent days, battery-run rickshaws were plying city main roads causing immense traffic congestion as they did not follow any traffic rules.
The battery-run rickshaws were seen plying on even flyover, posing a risk to citizens.
In the final week of May this year, the ousted Awami League government backtracked on its decision to ban operations of unauthorised battery-run rickshaws in Dhaka city amid street protests by their drivers.
Drivers of battery-run rickshaws and easy-bikes held a demonstration for the two consecutive days protesting at the government’s decision to ban the vehicles in the capital without ensuring alternative employment.
