The doctors and nurses at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital on Saturday kept services suspended protesting at attacks on the hospital staff members.

They stopped services from the Saturday morning alleging an attack on the hospital staff members by a patient’s relative and outsiders at around 10:00am resulting in sufferings of patients of Shariatpur and other six upazilas.

The hospital authorities alleged that a patient’s relative named Raihan Pahar along with outsiders physically assaulted the hospital employees, including brother Abu Hanif, cleaner Dulal Dhali, cook Khaled Sikder, office assistant Zobayer Hossain and pharmacist Bikash Kumar Sarkar.

The protesting doctors and nurses also stopped the emergency service protesting at the attacks.

They announced that they would not join their work until the attackers were arrested and workplace safety was ensured.

They, however, resumed the emergency service at around 1:00pm.

Senior nurse Nasima Akter said, ‘A youth claiming him to be a relative of a patient from the medicine department came to take the patient’s file. I told him that we could not hand over a patient’s file to him.’

Cleaner Dulal alleged that Raihan Pahar and some others came to the emergency department and started beating them.

‘We will not work until he is given exemplary punishment,’ said Dulal.

The hospital superintendent, Habibur Rahman, said that he identified one of the attackers named Raihan.

‘Others will be identified through CCTV footage,’ said Habibur.

Palong Model thana officer-in-charge Mezbah Uddin Ahmed said that on information police rushed to the hospital but the attackers fled the scene.

He said that the police would conduct drives to arrest the attackers after receiving a written complaint.

‘Additional forces have been deployed at the hospital to ensure safety of doctors, nurses, staff members, and patients,’ added the OC.

Raihan could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.
