A Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader of Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila was allegedly beaten to death during a factional clash between two rival BNP groups on Friday.
The deceased is Emdadul Haque Aklu, 65, president of the BNP’s ward 6 unit under Muktarpur union of the upazila.
At least seven people were injured in the incident that took place in the Nashu Market area at about 11:00am.
Gazipur district additional superintendent of police for crimes and operations Nazmus Sakib said that the deceased had multiple injury marks on his body.
The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the official said.
No one has yet been arrested in the incident, he said, adding that it was primarily believed that Emdadul was killed during a clash between two BNP groups over establishing supremacy in the area.
The Kaliganj unit BNP, however, alleged that Awami League members were responsible for the attack.
BNP Kaliganj upazila unit general secretary Bablu Mia claimed that some local Awami League activists attacked Emdadul and his supporters when they reached Nashu Market area.
‘They assaulted him and beat him to death,’ Bablu alleged.
