
Four construction workers died after they had fallen from two separate under-construction buildings in Uttara and Badda areas in the capital on Thursday.
The deceased are Aliur Ali, 21, Md Abdullah Al Masum, 18, Kutub, 22, all hailed from Chapainawabganj, and Mohammad Nasir, 40.
In the first incident, three workers died after they had fallen from an under-construction building in Uttara’s Azampur area.
Confirming the matter, Uttara West police station sub-inspector Sumon Das told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident took place at about 11:30am.
‘The bodies were kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy. A case will be filed after the bodies will be handed over to the family,’ he said.
Three workers fell down while working on the ninth floor of the 14th floor under-construction building on Road 3 at Sector 4 in Uttara at about 11:30am, leaving them seriously injured.
The injured were taken to a local hospital where Aliur was declared dead, said Shah Alam, victim Aliur’s brother-in-law.
‘As Masum and Kutub’s condition deteriorated, they were brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency department where the doctor on duty declared them dead,’ SI Sumon said.
Meanwhile, in another incident, Mohammad Nasir accidentally fell down while working on plaster on the eighth floor of a construction building in Badda’s Aftab Nagar area in the afternoon, leaving him seriously injured.
Victim’s nephew Nurul Islam said that Nasir was rushed to the DMCH, where he was declared dead.
DMCH outpost in-charge Md Faruk said that Nasir’s body was kept at the morgue for autopsy.
Safety and Rights Society, a non-government organisation, revealed in a report in 2020 that 550 workers died on average in each of the past ten years. The organisation recorded 433 deaths in 2020.
The organization in its 2020 report observed that the highest number of workplace deaths occurred in the transport sector with 168 deaths recorded, followed by the construction sector recording 118 deaths, service sector recording 86 deaths, manufacturing sector counting 45 deaths and agriculture sector recording 16 deaths.
Of the deaths in the construction sector, 112 deaths occurred in building construction, five in bridge construction and one in road construction, the report said.
