The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit on Tuesday directed banks and financial institutions to freeze bank accounts of former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence Lieutenant General Saiful Alam, his wife, and children.
The bank accounts of the businesses owned by them have also been asked to keep suspended, according to a BIFU official.
Just a day after the August 5 fall of Sheikh Hasina amid the student-led mass uprising, Saiful Alam was transferred to foreign ministry on deputation.
All transactions through these accounts will remain frozen for next 30 days, the official said, adding that if necessary, the period of suspending the transactions will be extended.
The banks and financial institutions have been asked to send the accounts-related information and transaction statements to the BFIU in five working days.
Saiful Alam was appointed as the DG of the DGFI on February 28, 2020.
On July 5, 2021, Saiful Alam was appointed the Quarter Master General of the Bangladesh Army.
