The teachers of Jagannath University at a meeting on Monday demanded a wise and courageous vice-chancellor from within the university.
Organised by the Jagannath University Teachers Association at the teachers ‘association lounge, the university teachers demanded the VC must be capable of addressing the evolving challenges of both the nation and the university.
The teachers emphasised that the past vice-chancellors of the university had merely fulfilled their routine duties without a genuine commitment to the university.
They noted that the completion of the university’s second campus should not have taken more than six to seven years, but a lack of dedication had delayed the progress.
The current national and university context have changed, providing an opportune moment to assert their demands, they further stated, arguing that only someone from within the university could truly understand and address the campus’s crucial challenges.
They also mentioned that the ideal VC must possess the wisdom, courage, and qualifications necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern academic environment.
Md Bilal Hossain of the history department remarked, ‘For 19 years, we have not had a vice-chancellor from Jagannath University, resulting in insufficient progress in education, research, and infrastructure. We are falling behind.’
Philosophy department teacher Lutfur Rahman, Physics department’s Md Nure Alam Abdullah, Psychology department’s Muhammad Akram Uzzaman, Islamic Studies department’s Mohammad Rezaul Hossain, Mathematics department’s Mostaq Ahmed, and Geography and Environment department chairperson Mohammad Abdul Kader, among others, spoke at the meeting.
