A battery-run auto-rickshaw driver was stabbed to death allegedly by a group of muggers at Basabo slope of Khilgaon flyover in Dhaka on Saturday.

The deceased, Mohammad Yusuf, 40, hailed from Narayanganj’s Araihazar. He used to live in a rented house in Boro Bottola area in Khilgaon.

Sabujbagh police station officer-in-charge Md Yeasin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident occurred at about 5:00am.

The victim’s brother Md Babul filed a case, accusing unidentified persons over Yusuf’s death, he said.

The OC also said that the number of the attackers could not be known immediately, and an investigation was underway to identify the killers and arrest them.

Yusuf was the sole breadwinner for his five-member family, the victim’s family members said.

Babul said that Yusuf’s body was buried at his village in Champak Nagar.

‘Like any other day, my father left home with his rickshaw early morning on Saturday. At about 5:00am, a pedestrian informed the family that my father had been stabbed by muggers at Basabo slope of the Khilgaon flyover,’ said Emran Hossain, the victim’s son.

The pedestrians took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, he said.

Emran suspected that the muggers attempted to steal Yusuf’s rickshaw and stabbed him in the chest and abdomen when he resisted.

The DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Bachchu Mia said that the body was handed over to the family after autopsy.

Earlier on August 27, a software engineer named Zarraf Ahmed was stabbed to death allegedly by two muggers in the capital’s Darussalam area.

The next day, Zarraf’s cousin Kaniz Sharmin filed a murder case with the Darussalam police station.
