The Fire Service and Civil Defence on Friday said that the fire that broke out at Gazi Auto Tyres Factory in Rupganj of Narayanganj on Sunday night was completely doused after nearly six days.

Confirming the matter, the fire service station officer Talha Bin Zasim said that the firefighters doused the blaze completely at about 6:00pm on Friday.

However, no casualties were found yet, he said.

‘The rescue committee will inform the casualties. The cause would be known only after the investigation,’ added the fire service official.

Families earlier claimed that 176 people were missing. But local students and the police put the number of missing people at 129.

It was risky to enter the building and search for any bodies as three floors of the six-storey building collapsed in the fire, said Rakib Ahsan, a building expert from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology who visited the spot on Thursday.

Earlier on Wednesday, fire service officials said that the building was searched from outside using drones to see if there was any victim.

Hundreds of people broke into the factory in the Rupshi area on Sunday afternoon, hours after Gazi Group chairman and former Awami League lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi was arrested and later put on six-day remand.

Later, at about 9:00pm, unidentified miscreants allegedly set fire to the ground floor of the factory, triggering the massive blaze.

Fire service station officer Talha Bin Zasim said that from the spot they so far rescued 14 people, all of whom were saved on August 25.
