Home adviser to the interim government, lieutenant general (retired) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, stated on Sunday that Bangladesh’s law and order situation had been gradually improving.
‘While the law and order situation is improving, we are facing some challenges due to ongoing agitations from various professional groups,’ he said during a meeting with the French ambassador to Bangladesh, Marie Masdupuy, at the secretariat in Dhaka.
The discussion also covered topics such as law enforcement reforms, recovering illegal arms, and addressing security concerns.
In response to concerns over looted weapons from police stations following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina’s government, the home adviser announced plans for a special drive to recover illegal arms.
Jahangir Alam also mentioned that action would be taken against the misuse of licensed arms issued during the previous government.
On the subject of police reforms, he acknowledged that police forces often faced significant pressure due to insufficient rest.
He confirmed that plans were in place to revamp the police forces, though these initiatives were still in the early stages.
He added that reforms would gradually extend to other forces under home ministry, in addition to the police.
Senior officials from home ministry and deputy head of mission Guillaume Audren de Kerdrel of the French embassy in Dhaka were also present at the meeting.
