Bangladesh Athletics Federation general secretary Abdur Rakib Montu stepped down from his post on Wednesday citing personal reasons.

Montu, who is currently staying in the USA, submitted his resignation through mail to the federation president, Mohammad Tofazzel Hossain Miah, and the National Sports Council secretary, Md Aminul Islam.

Tofazzel, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 principal secretary, evaded public fury during a month-long student movement and is now out of contact following the government鈥檚 fall on August 5.

Montu was reelected as federation secretary in 2023, having been chosen first in 2019 after previously serving as ad-hoc committee secretary since 2017.

Montu had close ties with the Awami League-led government and was an aspirant to have a nomination from the Awami League to run in the January 7, 2024, general election from Sylhet-3 constituency.

During the previous government tenure, advocate Montu served as assistant attorney general and was a central committee member of the Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League.

Montu鈥檚 resignation comes a day after Athletic Federation鈥檚 senior joint secretary, SM Sharafat Hossain, stepped down from his post on Tuesday.

Sharafat resigned, citing personal and family reasons.
