The Chinese ambassador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, on Wednesday, affirmed the country’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh and its people in line with its policy of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other nations.

During a meeting with a delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by the party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Yao Wen also assured that China would enhance its investment in Bangladesh in the coming days to support the country’s development and the welfare of its people.

The Chinese envoy arrived at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office at about 11:00am and held an hour-long meeting with the party delegation.

‘We had discussions in a very cordial atmosphere. We are very pleased to have the Chinese ambassador in our office after a long time,’ Fakhrul said at a press conference following the meeting.

He said that their party took the meeting with the Chinese envoy at their chairperson’s office very seriously, especially in the wake of the student-led mass uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

China had a strong commitment to the people of Bangladesh, Fakhrul said, adding that they had made it clear that they did not believe in hegemony.

‘They [Chaina] had previously promised to always stand by the people of Bangladesh, considering the geopolitical situation, and they have reiterated this commitment,’ he said.

He said that their party appreciated China’s significant global role, particularly in providing economic assistance to the least-developed and developing countries.

The BNP leader mentioned that the Chinese ambassador greeted BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Fakhrul said that Yao Wen believed the relationship and cooperation between the BNP and the Chinese Communist Party would continue to strengthen.

‘We believe our relations with China will deepen, and we will advance our ties based on mutual trust,’ Fakhrul said.

Yao Wen added in the press conference that they had a very productive discussion with the BNP secretary general and the party leadership. ‘We reviewed and discussed our cooperation during the meeting,’ he said.

He said that the Chinese Communist Party and the BNP share a strong friendly cooperation and exchange relationship.

During the meeting, the Chinese envoy said that they agreed to carry forward these excellent ties and increase future exchanges and cooperation.

He also mentioned that they had discussed the current situation in Bangladesh and reaffirmed China’s policy of offering support without interfering in the internal affairs of any country.

BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Abdul Moyeen Khan, vice-chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, and law affairs secretary Kaiser Kamal were present at the meeting.
