Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the first Test against Pakistan that begins in Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

Hathurusingha emphasised that his team is well-prepared to face any challenge Pakistan may present.

‘We are prepared for whatever challenge Pakistan throws at us,’ said Hathurusingha during a press conference in Rawalpindi on Monday.

‘The Pindi pitch appears favourable for both fast bowling and batting. Considering Pakistan’s selection, we have also developed a strong contingent of fast bowlers.’

The Sri Lankan discussed the team’s strategic decisions, highlighting the inclusion of all-rounders Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who bring valuable spin options.

‘We expected Pakistan’s wickets to be different from Bangladesh and selected spinners based on merit, not just conditions.’

Hathurusingha expressed his appreciation for the support from the Pakistan Cricket Board, which facilitated excellent facilities for their preparations.

‘We are pleased with our preparations and look forward to the challenge.’

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has been in limbo ever since the fall of the Awami League government, with many board directors, including president Nazmul Hasan, going into hiding.

The cricket board is seemingly set to undergo a change in leadership, and the new authority could bring in fresh faces in other positions as well, including the coaching panel of the national cricket team.

Hathurusingha said he was aware that a change in personnel at the BCB could bring an early end to his second and largely unsuccessful stint with the Tigers but is also willing to continue in the role if the board wants.

‘I don’t know what’s happening back home. I have signed a contract till whatever the date [February 2025]. I am looking forward to serving the term. If the board changes, and the new people want to make a change, I am okay with that. If they want to continue with me, I am happy to continue,’ he said.

He also acknowledged concerns about Bangladesh’s batting performance but remained optimistic, noting the potential for better conditions in Pakistan.

He praised Shakib’s improved fitness and form, and also expressed confidence in the team’s young fast bowlers.

Additionally, Hathurusingha welcomed Mushtaq Ahmed to the coaching staff, noting that his extensive global experience will be a valuable asset to the team.

The two-match Test series is part of the World Test Championship’s third cycle, with Pakistan sixth in the current nine-team table and Bangladesh eighth.

The second Test—both matches moved to Rawalpindi because of construction work at Karachi Stadium—will be played from August 30.
