Abdur Rahman Boyati

Today is the 11th anniversary of the death of legendary folk artiste, lyricist, music composer and poet Abdur Rahman Boyati.

Born on January 1, 1939 at Dayaganj in Old Dhaka, Abdur Rahman Boyati started practicing music at an early stage by his mother’s inspiration.


The artiste made an immense contribution in popularising folk music rendering songs such as ‘Mon Amar Deha Ghari Sandan Kori’, Ei Prithibi Jeman Achhe’, ‘Din Gele Ar Din Pabi Na’, ‘Ekdin Chithi Diye Haibe Dakati’, ‘De De Pal Tule De’, ‘Piriti Kairachhe Kalangkini’, and ‘Ma Go Ma Jhi Go Jhi’.

His much-acclaimed song ‘Mon Amar Deha Ghari Sandhan Kori’ became immensely popular among the Bengali-speaking people.

Abdur Rahman Boyati’s voice and lyrics motivated and inspired freedom fighters during the War of Independence. In 1973, he got the opportunity to discuss the significance of folk songs with the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. 

His troupe performed in around 40 countries across the world, including the USA, the UK, former Soviet Union, China, Japan, Austria, Canada, Australia and India.

He was the only Bangladeshi singer who got the rare invitation to perform in the White House, USA upon invitation by the former American president George W Bush Senior in 1990.

He received the Ekushey Padak, President’s Award, Nazrul Academy Sammanana, among others.

The legendary artiste passed away on August 19, 2013 in Dhaka.
