The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday advised the Awami League leaders to surrender to the police, dropping their conspiracy against the country.

Speaking at a rally in Dhaka, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed doubt that the Awami League was looking to enter the country again with the help of India, making a drama of communal attacks.

‘Those who worked as allies of the dictatorial government, even including public servants of the republic, should be exposed, and those identified as criminals who worked in the government should be arrested and brought to justice,’ Mirza Fakhrul said at the rally.

The BNP organised this rally in front of the BNP Naya Paltan central office, demanding the trial of AL president and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and  her associates.

Fakhrul said that ‘murderer’ Sheikh Hasina had run a steamroller on BNP leaders and activists for 15 years.

‘People of different religions were tortured inhumanely. They filed false cases against 60 lakh BNP people. Hundreds of leaders and activists went missing,’ he said, adding that just before the January 7 general election, 28,000 leaders and activists were taken to prison in just two days.

‘BNP leaders and activists have made so much sacrifice for the restoration of democracy that it is rare in history. Many mothers lost their sons and sisters lost their brothers,’ he said.

Fakrul said that a new game had started in the name of attacks on minorities.

‘They [AL] are plotting again, wanting to come back with India’s help by doing something. All their conspiracies must be foiled,’ he said.

Referring to the arrest of former law minister Anisul Huq and Hasina’s former adviser Salman F Rahman, the BNP leader said that they should be tried at the International Crimes Tribunal.

He said that the people who committed the crime of genocide, and those who looted, tortured, and killed those must be tried.

‘The interim government is the product of our movement, and this government should be united and cooperated as long as they are in favour of democracy. Of course, the current government will hand over power to establish democracy through elections,’ he said.

He said that there was no alternative to a democratic government through the people’s vote.

About the attack on Hasina’s supporters in the Dhanmondi area when they went there to pay homage to the country’s founding president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, marking his death anniversary, Fakhrul said that no one had objected to giving flowers.

‘But students don’t want to see Sheikh Hasina and her people anymore. They do not want to see that picture anymore,’ he said.
