The students of the Global University Bangladesh in Barishal, owned by Awami League leader and former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, staged protest on Thursday as the authorities had halted all activities of the university for four days.
The agitated students protested at the sudden suspension of all activities for four days without any reason.
According to the university officials, former lawmaker and textile and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak is the trustee secretary and a syndicate and academic member of the university.
His wife Syeda Arjuman Banu Nargis is the trustee chairman and a syndicate and academic member of the university, the officials added.
The students said that they found a notice signed by the university registrar professor AKM Enayet Hossain on Thursday at various places on the campus and on the website announcing suspension of all activities of the university from August 15 to August 18 due to unavoidable reasons.
Some teachers and students were trapped inside the locked campus who called other students to help them out.
Later, some students freed them by breaking the lock.
In the afternoon, the students staged a protest in front of the university’s administrative building-1 at Nathullabad on the Sher-e-Bangla road in the city.
The vice-chancellor of the university, professor Anisuzzaman, could not be reached over the phone for his comment.
Law department student Hasibul Islam Rabbi said, ‘If anyone has a problem with the administration, they should resign and let the new ones run the university.’
The students made an eight-point demand, including the immediate resumption of all activities, including classes and examinations, resignation of assistant registrar Newamul Haque, publishing all income and expenditure accounts of the university every six months, banning all forms of politics in the university; eliminating discrimination in semester fees and waivers; increase the number of qualified teachers; stopping harassment of students and modernisation of the classrooms.
Registrar professor AKM Enayet Hossain said that he urged the students to submit their demands in written form.
A section of the teachers, officers and employees of Islamic Arabic University in Dhaka, meanwhile, on Thursday demanded resignation of the university vice-chancellor, professor Mohammad Abdur Rashid.
Under the banner of ‘All teachers, officers and employees– victims of discrimination’, they held a human chain in front of the campus alleging that the vice-chancellor was corrupted, said a press release.
