Sheikh Hasina was set to spend few more days in India awaiting the United Kingdom to accept her asylum request after the country initially rejected it, Indian media reported.
It was also reported in the Indian press that Hasina鈥檚 United States visa on her official passport would not remain valid since she resigned as prime minister.
India today reported that former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina having fled the country following massive unrest would stay in India for some more days as her purported plan to seek asylum in the UK hangs in the balance.
Hasina is likely to seek asylum in the UK as her sister, Sheikh Rehana, is a British citizen, the report said.
As of Tuesday, Sheikh Hasina stays in a safe house near the Hindon airbase near Delhi, the report said, adding that Hasina landed at the airport on Monday evening after violent protest and widespread riots dramatically ended her 15-year reign.
Citing UK Home Office, NDTV reported that British immigration rules did not allow individuals to travel to that country to seek asylum or temporary refuge.
The UK government 鈥 now headed by Sir Keir Starmer following Labour鈥檚 landslide win past month鈥 also said that individuals seeking asylum must do so 鈥榠n the first safe country they reach,鈥 NDTV reported.
鈥楾he UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. There is, however, no provision for someone to be allowed to travel to the UK to seek asylum or temporary refuge,鈥 the report quoted a UK home office spokesperson.
鈥楾hose who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach - that is the fastest route to safety,鈥 the NDTV reported.
Nevertheless, the report said that a formal asylum request was being processed in the UK.
The NDTV reported that the events in Bangladesh presented a problem for India, particularly if the UK turns down Sheikh Hasina鈥檚 asylum request.
India also does not want to be seen as overtly backing the ousted leader because that may complicate the country鈥檚 relationship with the new government in Bangladesh, whatever it may be, the NDTV said.
Indian media reported that Hasina travelled to the country with plans to move to the UK from there but the plan faced a hurdle because of the UK immigration policies.
The Hindu reported that 24 hours after ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka and landed at Delhi鈥檚 Hindon base, it was still unclear where her final destination would be, as sources confirmed that the United Kingdom was 鈥榰nlikely鈥 to accept her request for asylum.
The Hindu reported that Hasina was also studying her options with other countries like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, including those where her immediate family resides: US, Finland and India.
In Europe, Ms Hasina鈥檚 next option would be to travel to Helsinki where her nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby lives, and married a Finnish national, The Hindu reported.
The Finnish President Alexander Stubb鈥檚 office, however, did not respond to a request for comment on a possible request from Ms Hasina.
Hasina鈥檚 son Sajeeb Wazed 鈥淛oy鈥 lives in the US鈥檚 state of Virginia along with his wife, an American lawyer.
US officials said that they weren鈥檛 aware if Ms Hasina had applied for a US visa after fleeing Bangladesh, but confirmed that her present visa on her official passport would be 鈥榥o longer valid鈥 as she had resigned from her post, the Hindu reported.
The Hindu reported that India would find it difficult to explain Hasina鈥檚 presence, especially if the interim government or a new dispensation demands her extradition to stand charges in Bangladesh.
For similar reasons, the Hindu said that the Modi government did not accept requests from former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, or senior members of the Ashraf Ghani government when they fled their respective countries.
When asked whether Hasina鈥檚 visa was revoked, a US Embassy spokesperson in Bangladesh replied that visa records were confidential under the US law which also prevents discussing the details of individual visa cases.
