The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday said that the ongoing student movement was on the verge of victory now.
‘The Student Movement Against Discrimination platform gets a momentum with the participation of people from all walks of life. This ongoing movement is now on the verge of victory,’ BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
Fakhrul made these remarks after he had visited the families of jailed BNP standing committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury at their residences on the day.
After emerging from Khasru’s Banani house, Fakhrul told reporters that he believed that the people would definitely win and students must win.
He said that his party would continue to support and cooperate with the ongoing student movement.
He urged the political leaders to fulfil their due responsibilities in this movement.
‘We have declared not only cooperation but express our solidarity with the movement. We want to say more strongly that we will not only support the students in this logical movement, but will have all kinds of cooperation and express solidarity with them,’ he said.
‘We are fulfilling our responsibilities and duties as a political party and will continue to fulfil. At the same time, I call upon all the political leaders of the country to fulfil their responsibilities,’ he said.
Saying that the country was witnessing a mass awakening, he added that common people joined the student movement.
‘Not only students, parents, doctors, professionals, cultural activists, journalists, and all kinds of people have joined. They joined ignoring all fears. This is the biggest aspect of this movement that people woke up against injustice,’ he said.
Criticising the government’s role in the student movement, Fakhrul said, ‘The fascist government today has become a terrible monster. The way they have killed our children is indescribable. They killed hundreds of students.’
