The Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge court on Sunday rejected the petition of Layla Kaniz, the first wife of National Board of Revenue official Matiur Rahman, seeking the withdrawal of the ban on foreign travel.
Judge Mohammed Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain rejected the petition in the absence of Layla during the hearing on the day.
The Anti-Corruption Commission public prosecutor Mir Abdus Salam said that the court rejected Layla’s petition as she did not appear in the court on the scheduled day.
‘There is no opportunity to hear the application later,’ he added.
On June 24, the court banned Matiur Rahman, Layla Kaniz, and their son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnob from travelling abroad following an ACC application.
The court also ordered seizure of a huge amount of movable and immovable wealth of Matiur and his two wives and children following the ACC petition.
On June 30, Layla Kaniz, also chairman of Raipura upazila parishad in Narsingdi, submitted a petition to the court seeking the withdrawal of the ban, and the court set July 28 for holding a hearing on the petition.
Matiur was exposed to public scrutiny after a video of his second wife’s son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, buying a goat for Tk 12 lakh went viral on social media ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha in the past month.
He initially denied Ifat as his son, but the media confirmed their relationship by speaking to his relatives and revealed the assets of Matiur.
Speaking to a television channel, Matiur denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the ACC gave him clean chits four times in the past.
