Thirty-One cultural organisations on Wednesday in a joint statement urged the government to withdraw the ongoing curfew and stop mass arrests, cases, and harassment of the people in the country.

They also said that the government has lost its moral rights to stay in power due to the incidents of killing of students and citizens and failing to save the valuable assets of the state.

The organisations sent the joint statement to the media, signed by Bibarton Sangskritik Kendra general secretary Mafizur Rahman Laltu.

It said that the present unrest was created in the country due to the provocative speeches of the government high ups without considering the logical demands of the students over the reform of the quota system in government jobs.

The government failed to deal with the quota issue properly causing huge losses of lives and state properties, and the government cannot remain in power for its irresponsibility and incapability, it said.

In 2018, prime minister Sheikh Hasina created the problem by taking a decision to cancel all the quota in a wrong process, and she took the decision from her anger, breaking her oath as prime minister, the statement said.

The apex court delivered its recent verdict holding the court session with unprecedented haste and violating general ritual that tarnished the image of the court, and it gave a message to the people that the court has been turned into a subservient organisation of the government, said the statement.

The cultural activists urged the government to fulfil the demands of the students and ensure a democratic environment by withdrawing curfew.

They also urged the government to take legal action against the people involved in vandalism and the persons who failed to save the important establishment of the state.聽

The organisations also announced that they would hold a protest cultural rally and song procession at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Friday at 11:00am protesting at the killing of students and citizens.

The platform, Protibadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangathonsomuha, is represented 31 organisations, including Bibartan Sangskritik Kendra, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpighosthi, Pragati Lekhak Sangha, BotTola, Samageet, Teerondaj, and Theatre 52, among others.
